NorthStar students helped our garden expert, Mrs. Beglinger, create a hay bale garden at the Wascott Town Hall. The idea is to grow plants in the hay instead of the ground. We’re excited to see how it works.
Thursday, April 12th we helped gather water quality data with Lorna Wilson of the Gordon/St. Croix Flowage Association. Caitlin, Dustin and Tyler tested 4 different areas of the lake and took water samples from 2 sites which were sent to Madison for testing. Each Month Lorna and Roger Wilson do this testing to help the DNR track water quality in the flowage. The students did a great job as they tested and recorded the dissolved oxygen, temperature and clarity (with a secchi disk). We’re hoping to do more of this kind of work in the area.
The osprey platform built by NorthStar students, for the Gordon/St. Croix Flowage Assoc., has now been placed on a pole and put into place. Dahlberg Light and Power placed the pole on the north side of the Gordon/St. Croix Flowage in front of the North Shore Resort.
NorhStar students have started a Minong Area Museum! It’s a work in progress and will continue to grow and improve. The students will continue to post photos and stories. If you have any suggestions for exhibits please contact us here at NorthStar (715 466-2298)

The Richard Bong Museum in Superior was a big hit with the NorthStar students. On March 28th, we spent 2 hours at the museum. A local veteran showed us artifacts from the war and then the students spent some time looking over the exhibits. Before we left we saw a short film about Pearl Harbor. If you haven’t been to the Bong Museum I’d strongly suggest a visit.
On March 28th the students at NorthStar had the opportunity to see the Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra. It was their annual “Young People’s Concert.” For about an hour the DSSO education coordinator explained the music and instruments while the musicians played. The last song was played along with the DSSO Youth Orchestra. Northwood’s own Lisa Featherly is a member of the Youth Orchestra. It was a great experience for the students of NorthStar.
