Learning about Wild Rice

On Wednesday we spent the day on the Minong Flowage learning about wild rice and the process of harvesting.  We borrowed canoes from the Ernie Swift Camp and took turns learning how to collect the rice.  Our biologist, Matt McKay, was with the students on the water.  Tony Deperry talked to the students about the importance of wild rice in Native American culture.  Mrs. Lucius also worked with students on water testing and identifying  macro invertebrates.

After the lessons we stopped by the Totogatic Park and sampled a wild rice dish and some venison stew.
